SmartCo Commences Operational Phase

SmartCo announced today that the company has commenced detailed deployment planning for its smart meter network with deployments expected to commence in both the North and South islands during the first quarter of 2014.

Now the business is moving from a start up to operational phase, John O’Hara who led the establishment phase for SmartCo will retire later this month as chairman and Alpine Energy CEO, Andrew Tombs, will take over as chairman to lead the operational phase.

Andrew paid tribute to John’s leadership over the past two years in moving SmartCo from a concept to reality and acknowledged the often difficult process of establishing a venture that succesfully meets the needs of all stakeholders, distributors, retailers and their customers.

John thanked the board for their support during his time establishing the business and is pleased to see the venture move from concept to reality. “With Gavin Lennox as General Manager, SmartCo will I’m sure play a leading role in the deployment of smart meters in New Zealand. This will benefit electricity customers and their retailers and, by also offering distribution businesses new ways to manage their networks, the business will provide excellent value to all its stakeholders” said John.
